Too many politicians treat Social Security and Medicare like bargaining chips. I see them for what they are: commitments we’ve made as a country to one another. As the daughter of parents who rely on these programs and a pastor who has counseled families through end-of-life care, I understand what’s at stake.

That’s why I’ll never support cuts or privatization schemes—or attempts to weaken or eliminate IPERS here in Iowa for our public employees like teachers, firefighters, and police. Instead, I’ll fight to strengthen these programs—so every Iowan can retire with dignity, knowing they won’t have to choose between groceries and medicine. I’ll also work to expand access to Medicaid in our rural communities, where hospitals are closing and too many families are going without care.
