Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott running to represent Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District

Iowa State Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott narrowly won reelection in Iowa Senate District 14, defeating Republican challenger Mark Hanson by just 29 votes.

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — An Iowa state senator is officially announcing her bid to represent Iowa in Congress.

Sen. Sarah Trone Garriott, D-Dallas County, announced her campaign to take on Rep. Zach Nunn in Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District on Monday. Her candidacy was first reported by the Des Moines Register.

On her official campaign website, Trone Garriott said her campaign is a continuation of her “call to service.”

“She is running for Congress to ensure Iowans have a voice in Washington,” the website said. “Her journey from service worker to minister, nonprofit leader, and state legislator is a testament to her unwavering commitment to public service and the people of Iowa.”

Trone Garriott was first elected to the Iowa Senate in 2020. Outside of her work at the statehouse, she is an ordained minister and currently works for the Des Moines Area Religious Council Food Pantry Network.

Trone Garriott narrowly won reelection in 2024, defeating Republican challenger Mark Hanson by just 29 votes. Her campaign website cites her victory in Iowa Senate District 14 as a tribute to her success as a candidate.

“In 2024, she defended her district even though President Trump won it,” the website shared. “She is the only Democrat in Iowa to flip multiple districts while representing a district won by Donald Trump.”

In a statement to Local 5, a spokesperson for the National Republican Congressional Committee commented on Trone Garriott’s candidacy, saying in part, “Out of touch Democrat Sarah Trone Garriott is another activist attempting to radicalize Iowa – pushing a dangerous, extreme agenda that would raise costs, allow men in girls’ sports, and weaken public safety. Iowans want leaders who deliver commonsense results, and that’s exactly why they’ll send Zach Nunn back to Congress.”

Nunn recently announced he would not run for Iowa governor in 2026 and would instead focus on “[holding] Washington accountable.”
